Winnetka had its first home built here in 1836 and the oldest surviving house s the Schmidt-Burnham Log House. The name Winnetka is believed to originate from the Potawatomi language, meaning 'beautiful place'. The neighborhoods include estates and homes designed by many distinguished architects. A colonial Georgian house at 671 Lincoln Avenue was used a shooting location for interior scenes in the Home Alone series. The picture on the top of this page features a home where we removed a tired, weathered cedar shake roof and replaced it with an attractive high-quality CertainTeed shingle. We further improved the style and design by installing copper in all of the valleys on the roof. The end result was an attractive, functional roof that will look great for decades to come and will provide the necessary protection for the inside of the home.
On the other hand, traditional homes may have a portion of the roof that is a flat roof. That flat roof area may be a second-floor balcony or second or third floor deck space.
